Applying for Disability: What Is Social Security Disability?
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to people who can’t work because of a serious medical condition.
It’s run by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and is paid for through the taxes you pay while working.
There are two main disability programs:
- SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) – For people who worked and paid into Social Security but can no longer work because of a disability.
- SSI (Supplemental Security Income) – For people with low income and few resources who have never worked or haven’t worked enough to qualify for SSDI.
Although both programs help people with disabilities, they have different eligibility rules. Some people may qualify for both SSDI and SSI.
Who Qualifies for SSDI?
To qualify for SSDI, you must meet both medical and work requirements.
1. Medical Requirements
You must have a condition that:
- Makes it impossible to do full-time work (called substantial gainful activity or SGA).
- Has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months, or
- Is expected to result in death.
In 2025, the SSA considers you able to do “substantial work” if you earn more than $1,470* per month. If you earn less, you can still apply.
2. Work Requirements
SSDI is an insurance program—you qualify by paying Social Security taxes from your paychecks. Every year you work, you earn work credits.
- You can earn up to 4 credits per year.
- The number of credits you need depends on your age when you became disabled.
- Most people need around 40 credits (about 10 years of work), and 20 of those must be earned in the last 10 years before becoming disabled.
**You must also be under age 65 to receive SSDI.
Once you receive SSDI for two years, you automatically qualify for Medicare—even if you’re younger than 65.
